The western lake district of the Netherlands is a perfect starting point for cruises to the large old Dutch cultural centres of Amsterdam, Leiden, Gouda, Utrecht and The Hague.

The meandering river Vecht runs from Utrecht to the lake IJ-meer near Amsterdam.  The traders who made fortune in the Golden Age constructed the loveliest of country-estates, castles and charming tea-houses. 

At proximity lie tens of lakes, such as the Vinkeveense Plassen and the Loosdrechtse Plassen, which were dug by man to get to the 'brown gold' which was the peat.  You will find a lively atmosphere in well-equiped marinas.

De River Hollandse IJssel connects Utrecht to the West with Montfoort and Gouda.  Over the river Ouderijn one can join the beautiful city of Leiden. 

To the North-East of Leiden lies the lake Kager Plassen with the world famous Keukenhof, where millions of tulips will welcome you, and the Westeinder Plassen next to Aalsmeer.

You are now well on your way to Amsterdam, where you can cruise the city canals.

The river Zaan leads to Alkmaar, famous for its cheese, or even further to the far north city of Den Helder, with its marine museum.
